Our Next Read Will Be...
With three votes our next read will be:
The Leopard by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa
Set in the 1860s on the island of Sicily, this Italian classic
re-creates with nostalgia, drama, and opulence, the tumultuous years of
Italy's Risorgimento, when the aristocracy lost its grip and the middle
classes rose and formed a unified, democratic Italy. The dramatic sweep
and richness of observation, the seamless intertwining of public and
private worlds, and the grasp of human frailty imbue The Leopard with its particular melancholy beauty and power, and place it among the greatest historical novels of our time.
To cope with the May bank holidays I'm going to suggest we all post reviews on 8th June.
There's plenty of editions of the book available and it's widely available from libraries and secondhand. Happy reading!

Oh, that's great: thanks for organizing this. I'm sorry I didn't vote -- I lost track of the deadline among other things. But this would have been a top choice from your interesting list.
Amazingly enough, there were multiple copies of this (I saw at least three) at a used book sale I went to yesterday. Just $1 each! So I got a copy and hope to find time to read it by June.
