I'd like to go back to her now, perhaps pick up The Virgin in the Garden. Something more narrative based, I think.

Rohan - I felt very similarly, and think it's also to do with the strange lack of narrative until quite late in the book. I thought it was really intriguing that Byatt presented the myths the way she did, through the perspective of the older Byatt looking back at her younger self, but she couldn't resist that coda where she made sense of it all and explained her own interpretation. I'm not quite sure what to say about it, but the fact that she had both those views was odd and interesting.litlovehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10952927245186474480noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30395167.post-91715069514425215232012-08-01T18:32:16.478-05:002012-08-01T18:32:16.478-05:00What a great write-up of this odd book.

Though I could get caught up in the writing, I never got comfortable in the book as a whole until that last bit--which I guess says that I'm not used to working with or thinking about myths, among other things (which is true).Rohan Maitzenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12111722115617352412noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-30395167.post-4940124035656654532012-08-01T08:08:31.274-05:002012-08-01T08:08:31.274-05:00I really liked how Byatt did this too, how she res...I really liked how Byatt did this too, how she resisted rewriting the myths but instead incorporated them as they are into the narrative of the thin child. And she did it in her wonderful Byatt style. Goodness that woman knows how to write!Stefaniehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14943596258182968212noreply@blogger.com
