After the betrayal, Alice was shocked but on some level expected it, perhaps just because so much else had gone wrong in her life already. I'm not sure about Alice's unreliability -- it's a tricky question. I guess I think she's generally right in her view of the world, but perhaps with Nicholas hope and desire got in the way of clear thinking. It was hard to believe he took any interest in her, but it seemed to be going so well! And then when he dumped her for the other girl, it seemed so in keeping with how awful poor Alice's life always turns out to be. Do you think he was ever romantic about her?
