I'd always thought that the reason so many horror films have that begining bit where everyone is happy and normality reigns was just to make the first instance of horror more unexpected, but your idea that not everything can be neatly settled and fitted into a normal life is a very contextually apt idea as the Victorians were obsessed with presenting a front of perfection and normality.
